There was a time when Boagworld used to be my personal blog. I wrote about all aspects of my life, not just web design. I miss those days. Boagworld has become a business tool and that is okay but just occasionally I have found myself wanting to write personal posts and I don’t have anywhere to put them.
I have played with the idea of a personal blog, but to be frank I don’t want to post that regularly about personal stuff so it didn’t seem worth it.
I have therefore decided to claim back Boagworld… at least on the weekends.
So be warned, every once in a while you might find a personal post appearing in your RSS feed and for that I apologise. Hopefully it maybe of interest but if not you will know just to delete anything posted on the weekends because it will be personal.
But I digress. The reason for posting the occasional personal update was because I wanted to tell you about Mogworld.
What is Mogworld?
Mogworld is a book written by Yahtzee Croshaw, the mastermind behind the Zero Punctuation video review series.
The book follows the story of Jim. Jim lives in your typical fantasy world with sword, sorcery and more heroes than you can shake a stick at.
Jim also is unfortunate enough to be dead. The book follows his attempts to die permanently as undeath doesn’t seem to suit him.
Beyond that I do not wish to say too much for fear of giving away the plot, which has lots of fun (if somewhat predictable twists).
Why I loved it
Mogworld is just fun. It doesn’t try to be clever, meaningful or have deep subtexts. In short it felt like an early discworld book, where a dwarf saying "bugger" was enough to make you smile.
Don’t get me wrong, I still love Terry Pratchett’s books, but they are something different now. Mogworld has the silliness and frivolity that has largely gone out of Pratchett’s writing.
I seem to move back and forth between heavy duty sci-fi and equally challenging non fiction, so something as downright ridiculous was just the breath of fresh air I needed.
Best of all I listened to it as an audiobook which is ideal for commuting by car. The audiobook is read by the author and his voice suits the sarcasm, cynicism and depression of the main character perfectly.
So, if you need something to bring a smile to your face, you won’t do better than Mogworld.
